Forestry

CCC works with conservation organizations, forest reserve holders and First Nations to develop carbon offsets through the Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) mechanism, improved land management (ILM) and afforestation.

We are beginning work on full ecosystem services offsets, where other environmental attributes received through preservation of important ecosystems are priced and valued.

Revenue from carbon credits can be used to finance forest conservation programs.

Background
Deforestation of the world’s forests continues at the rate of one hectare per minute. According to the IPCC 4th Assessment Report (AR4), 2008, land-use practices in forestry and agriculture can impact approximately 35% of global green-house gas emissions.

Deforestation has a greater impact on GHG emissions than road, marine & air transportation world-wide & reversing deforestation will be key to success in halting the progress of global warming.

At the IPCC Conference in Bali 2007 the importance of natural processes (bio-sequestration) was highlighted, and a deadline of late 2009 was set for enhancement of these applications in the post 2012 Kyoto process.
